Our Mission is to raise funds for those affected by costly school supply expenses in the Mississippi Delta region. We understand the vitality of properly equipping children and young adults with the tools they need to succeed. Unfortunately, across the Mississippi Delta many counties negatively breach the poverty line by well over 30%. Additionally, due to various socio-economic factors, teen pregnancy and single parenthood exceed the average percentage as compared to other regions across Mississippi. The combination of the two has historically led to the inability to afford basic school supplies. The effects are observed in the subpar testing averages in Delta-based school districts. According to a Mississippi Today analysis, Delta-based school districts scored approximately 16% lower on Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) exams. In the same study it was found that only 23.7% of Delta-based school district students were scored at the proficient or advanced level for ELA. In math, only 27% of students met this criteria. However, the Delta Scholar’s Initiative aims to take a stand against the academic effects of poverty, and with every dollar we wage war against the gap in education across Mississippi.
